For some time I have been looking at doing something else with my life other than being a corporate drone. With the economy still spiralling downwards and IBM looking to lose people, I volunteered to leave in July 2002 with a separation package. One of the things I had been giving some thought to was teaching English abroad. I saw this as being something that would give me a lot of job satisfaction and a good way of being able to work abroad fairly easily. I still have a desire to travel but am keener to work with, and understand, local people rather than just be a tourist.
After lots of researching on the internet I found the Boland School in Brno. I had visited Prague in 1994 and enjoyed the Czech Republic so was not averse to returning. Brno, the capital of Moravia, is not as big as Prague and doesn't boast the same cultural wealth but is a pleasant city and does not suffer from being overrun by tourists. |

| Although the school had arranged various trips at weekends I found myself too busy with classwork and studying to take full advantage. Weekend school work meant that I wasn't able to do as much as I'd hoped on the weekends but we did manage one field trip to Boskovice, a small town fairly close to Brno. |
