Hat Yai Accommodation Tip

Longer term accommodation options normally require a minimum three month stay and a deposit two to three times the monthly rental cost. In addition, you need to supply your own (or rent) bed sheets, etc. However, long term accommodation is very cheap in Thailand compared to many other countries.

Comments: One of the three top hotels (along with Lee Gardens Plaza and the Novotel) that dominate the central tourist area of Hat Yai. It has probably the nicest lobby area of any hotel in Hat Yai (pictured) and the rooms in the new wing are very pleasant. The rooms contain personal safes which is a really welcome feature. The old wing is looking a bit past its best these days and is probably due for a bit of a makeover.

On the fifth floor is a decent size swimming pool which is exclusively for the use of guests and free. There is also a well-equipped gym, also for guests only, but it costs Bt50 to use.

Rates quoted above are direct from the hotel but once again it is possible to get a cheaper deal from a travel agent about 100 yards away. Konsortium travel agency can offer you a standard room in the old wing for Bt700 and a deluxe room in the new wing for Bt1,050. Note though that the Konsortium price does not include breakfast whereas the higher rate direct from the hotel includes breakfast for two people.

Comments: This hotel used to be the plain old River Inn Hotel but after a change of ownership and a new coat of paint it is now the River Grand Suite Hotel.

It overlooks a canal (klong in Thai), and not a river. The location is fairly quiet, yet it is still convenient for Hat Yai's many and varied attractions.

The woman on the front desk wasn't particularly helpful or friendly, and didn't really want to give me any information. I noticed that there was a restaurant but the massage shop that used to exist when it was the River Inn doesn't seem to be there any more.

Comments: A nice, clean-looking hotel centrally located close to Lee Gardens. The whole place appears to have been completely refurbished quite recently (2004/2005?). There are over 100 double and twin rooms which come with A/C, satellite TV, hot water in the bathrooms, a kettle, hairdryer, refrigerator and mini-bar.

The hotel has 24 hour security. Sakol is pronounced 'Saa-gon' in Thai. It means international/Western.

Guest Comments:

  • Very small room, I was astounded that the sofa and the bed is just near the door with a tiny writing table and a small bathroom finishing the look. There is no view..the channels on the television are good though and there an electric kettle provided in each room. I just find the room too small, almost tiny for the rate that I have to pay and even though early in the morning, in the lobby, the hotels provides a free drink stand with biscuits and 3-in-1 tea/coffee but I was quite irritated with the frosty receptionists and front desk who are actually older ladies. I did not like the way they spoke to me and I would not be here again. (April 2009)

Comments: The Sakura and Sakura Grand View hotels are owned by the same people (they are also located just across the street from each other), but they are separate hotels.

At the Sakura you will find a karaoke lounge, and downstairs at the Dara Cafe you can watch a free 'Coyote and Sexy Show'. Well, entrance is free but once inside you will be hounded to death for tips. I went there once. Not only did the performers and wait staff want tips, but there was also an attendant in the toilet whose constant fussing over me indicated that he wanted a tip as well. "No, it's OK thanks, I can hold it myself."

To ease your aches and pains, and maybe more, you can call in at the Sakura massage shop.

The rate of Bt630 is for a room without breakfast. Alternatively you can pay a rate of Bt870 and this includes breakfast for two people.

Comments: Located close to the Hat Yai Central Hotel and opposite the Sakura Hotel, the Sakura Grand View has quite a fancy lobby and boasts 'panoramic views of the city'. The hotel brochure also claims that the building is an 'innovatively architectural design' (sic). I don't think Sir Norman Foster was involved with the design; it just looks like a typical Thai hotel to me.

Sakura Grand View is a standard mid-range Hat Yai hotel and this one is very popular with Malaysian tourists. There is a large 'ancient' massage facility inside the hotel (Sayuri massage) with lots of young massage girls from north and northeast Thailand, Karaoke girls, snooker, a restaurant, and a bar.

A Karaoke place with lots of pretty girls sitting outside every evening is located right next door. It used to be called Violin, I think, but now it has been painted orange and is called The Star. It features Karaoke and Coyotes. Thailand must be the only country in the world where Coyote is a recognised job description.

Guest Comments:

  • 2nd trip staying at this hotel room #1509, complained about air-con too cold; their technicians couldn't do anything about it, instead they told me to "off/on" manually. After talking to them i felt so stupid. Suggest you take this into consideration when booking a hotel room. (September 2011)
  • Of the many hotels i have stayed in hatyai since 1980s, this hotel is better than most and the price is affordable. (July 2011)
  • Very popular with Malaysian tourists as it offers a comfortable and quiet stay with all the rooms sound-proofed against the busy main street below. The free wi fi in the room and also hotel lobby is a definite plus factor and the view from my room on the 11th floor is just wonderful. The massage facility and the people working there are made up of mostly fair-skinned lasses from the North and I must admit that some are quite stunning! The room is also fitted with a safe deposit box which can hold a 14" laptop for those who DO bring one. Rooms are always well cleaned and I find that this is indeed one of the better hotels away from the central part of Hat Yai. (October 2010)
  • Clean, spacious mostly cater for Malaysian especially during the Malaysia school or public holidays. Price are high compare to Bangkok for services provided at the same star of hotel. Most important to point to visitor that the receptionist are the most unfriendly to guest that visit Hatyai for different purpose, etc. perhaps due to those visitors for cheap leisure... . Exclusively to services except common reply in Thailand "a moment please" even for the simple direct answer and my last visit was April, 2011 and waited for a room for more than 5 hours. WHY, they refused to advise that the main water pipe in the hotel bursted. Finally, checked-in to the room and had waited for another 3 -4 hours before the water runs clean.

Worst, reached the hotel at 0900m hours after travelled from Seam Reap, crossed border to Arayanprathet to Bangkok waited for 9 hours at the Sai Tai Mai Bus Terminal for departure Bangkok at 1930 hours to reach Hatyai next day 0730 hours and reached Grand Sakura View Hotel at 0800 hours. Next trip August 01, 2011 to Golden Triangle and doing the same via bus which is one of the bus system in Thailand that I frequently enjoy heading from Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai-Krabi-Hatyai-Peng and all the way back to Kampong in Singapre. All for sight-seeing, local food and beer with reasonable and comfortable h-o-t-e-l. (Yearly 2 to 3 times at 2-4 nights each visit)

Comments: This medium size hotel is a little way from the centre of town, however, the location is quite convenient. There are lots of places to eat nearby and it doesn't take long to walk into town.

The room prices are cheap and the hotel offers free Wi-Fi.

I used to stay in an apartment very close to SC Heritage and each evening a selection of painted ladies would arrive by tuk-tuk and disappear into the hotel.

According to a few online forums I visited years ago, the girls can be rented but they are quite expensive (by Thai standards). I have no clue whether this business is still in operation.

Comments: The Singapore Hotel owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Lonely Planet. In one edition of LP the description for this hotel included the magic words, 'security-conscious'. Backpackers, worried about someone stealing their flip-flops or baggy Chinese fisherman pants, flock here and I know it can only be because of the LP endorsement. They would never find the hotel otherwise - it's a lot further than 150m from the train station for a start.

But is it really 'security-conscious'? As far as I can tell it is no more or less 'security-conscious' than any other Hat Yai hotel in this price range. Anyone entering the hotel has to pass the reception desk but that is not unusual. It really makes me wonder about LP at times when they come out with these vague statements.

Note: It's January 2005 and I have just flicked through the latest Lonely Planet Thailand Guide. I am pleased to see they have changed some of the things written in earlier editions (including what I complained of above) and generally their review of Hat Yai in the latest edition seems to be a bit better than it was previously.

Comments: At the time of writing (March 2007), this - as far as I am aware - is Hat Yai's newest hotel. I've said it many times before that new hotels are always a good bet in Thailand. They look great when they are first completed but after a few years they normally get quite tatty.

I visited three weeks after the hotel opened and it looked great. Rooms have the usual facilities plus personal safes which I wish every hotel would have. The location is quiet and because Hat Yai is so small the hotel is still close to everything.

For a room rate less than Bt1,000 a night you can't really go wrong. Because it's so new, the hotel isn't on the map yet but it's fairly close to the Emperor Hotel.

Guest Comments:

  • Atmosphere and the Standard Room - This is a peaceful location and pleasant building with a bright front office area. In this hotel, I only stay in the standard room which is spacious (I do not have the exact measurement), one would have a welcoming feel when one steps into the room, I like it for Hatyai standard and there is no need to upgrade. The front office manager said my room rate is a special rate, baht 900 a night nett, I am not sure that is true or not. After the 2010 November flood the owner introduced the deluxe room (which I have seen it before, the only visible difference is the presence of a LCD TV, so its not worth paying the extra). The standard room comes with a digital safe box, which I feel every hotel should have this, mini fridge, some snacks, TV with cable network, air-conditioning works very well can be control individually, it has hot/cold water shower and bath tub facility in a comfortable size bathroom. From my last experience being stranded by the November 2010 massive flooding in Hatyai town, I had no problem with hot water ( because the emergency power generation was cleverly located above flood water level) and cold water for bathing because the owner has his own private water supply. Free wi-fi in the room, just don't book the end of the hall way rooms, wi-fi reception is very poor to no signal (401 and 403). Laundry and dry cleaning service. Free 2 bottled water daily for each room. This hotel has no smoking floors which I love very much but damn the Malaysian tourist, sometimes they are so bloody inconsiderate.

Cleanliness - From the lobby to the hall way, toilet and inside the room, cleanliness and tidiness seem to be their priorities.

Service Quality - Front office staff are friendly, bell service staff are attentive, housekeepers are friendly and willing to accommodate guest's request. This case may be due to me being a regular guest here. My son was having high fever the last trip I was here, besides bringing my own medicine, one of the housekeeping lady took the effort to go out of the hotel and get for my son "the fever cooling pads" to reduce my son's high temperature. I am so grateful to her, I wouldn't know where to get them and most importantly, her suggestion to use this fever cooling pads.

F&B - There is only 1 restaurant and used to serve great Thai foods, I had dinner many times there, the moo det diao, tod mun goong, gaeng ped pet yang, khao oak saparot and gaeng som, these are some of my favourites. The Thai food there are still nice, they have a new chef now. I am yet to try out all my favourite dishes to make comparison. I never have my breakfast in the hotel before, I normally go out to eat so I can't tell you about breakfast. Room service foods are ok, as long as its Thai foods. I once ordered cream of mushroom soup for my son, it tasted horrible. So stay away from ordering Western food.

Facilities - No swimming pool, no gym, no spa, no hotel own massage parlour, just rooms, a restaurant, banquet hall at 1st floor and nice car park. (free wi-fi in the lobby and one public computer connected to network for guests to use)

Safety - There are security cameras at the hallway leading to all rooms and the security personnel are always around. I do feel safe here.

Location - To go to the central part of the town, eg. Lee Garden and Central Shopping supermarket, a tuk-tuk will take just little over 5 minutes. A few minutes walk from the hotel there are many famous eateries around, Nan Yuan Wanton noodles shop (if you like noodle, this is the shop), a local style food-courts, noisy and crowded but serve good street foods, like deep fried sala pao. One of the best "Khao mun kai" Thai chicken rice I ever had in Hatyai is also located around here. There was one time, my daughters and I witnessed a very large advance order of this chicken rice made by a customer came in a car, 60 packs! This street stall only starts their business in the evening time. This hotel is tucked away from the busy traffic congestion spots and as I drive myself, it's just perfect, avoiding those heavy traffic to get to my hotel. Plenty of private open car park lots on a nicely paved cemented area. There is also an in-door basement car park too, but my fear of flooding put me off parking there. (2012)

Comments: At the bottom end of the apartment rental market in Hat Yai you can find a room for Bt2,000 or less. However, having viewed some of these places I would humbly suggest that few foreigners would enjoy living in such squalid conditions.

To get something that resembles Western standards requires paying Bt4,000 to Bt5,000 or more per month. Spring Home Apartment (or Spring Holmes Apartments, as it is referred to on the sign outside) looks quite reasonable for Bt4,500 per month.

The rooms have some basic furniture and A/C, but no TV or fridge. Depending on how long you stay for, these items can be bought or rented. Personally, I wouldn't bother with a TV as Thai TV programmes are so dire.

The location, near to Jiranakorn Sports Stadium and the President Hotel roundabout, is convenient and there is easy access to sawng-thaews, tuk-tuks, minivans and buses.

Comments: Throughout Thailand you will find lots of seedy areas, however, many of these places are quite popular with tourists. The reason is simple. Certain types of male tourist are attracted to certain activities that go on in Thailand and these activities tend to occur in seedy areas.

I really dislike the area this hotel is located in because it is so dirty and boring. Other than that, the hotel looks OK. There are 64 rooms and it looks cleaner than other hotels nearby.

It has the usual facilities that you would expect to find in a mid-priced provincial Thai hotel. The hotel offers Wi-Fi, but unlike some other hotels this service isn't free. Five hours will cost you Bt50, 20 hours Bt90, or you can have 100 hours for Bt400.

As usual, the English transliteration of the name is terrible. The first vowel is a long 'ee' and the 't' at the end isn't pronounced. Thai uses a little symbol over consonants to show they aren't pronounced, but when words are transliterated into English the unvoiced consonants are written. Complete madness.

Comments: Not for tourists, but for those looking to spend longer in Hat Yai.

This development contains property to buy, as well as some units to rent. Different room sizes are available starting from Bt5,500 per month (not including electricity). The location is a little way out of town on Suphasarnrangsan Road. The advantage over somewhere like Wanthana Mansion is that it is set back from the main road a little so therefore it is quieter.

The disadvantage is that if you don't have your own transport then it will mean paying for a lot more tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis into town.

When I first saw this place at the end of 2003 it looked OK. Six years later, and it seems that no external maintenance has been done at all. The paint is a mess and generally the building is looking very run-down.

During the economic boom in the 1990's a lot of property was built in Thailand by investors hoping to make a good return on their money. After the bubble burst a lot of property wasn't sold and people lost interest.

A lot of places that were originally designed to be luxurious condos look like quite shoddy apartment buildings now.

Comments: A visitor to this site asked why I hadn't included the Taipei. I'm not sure. I've been past hundreds of times but for some reason never included it here. Well, here it is.

Many hotels in Thailand these days are international standard and although they are comfortable and convenient, some of the more adventurous travellers might find them a tad boring.

The Taipei is reminiscent of the kind of hotels that you used to find all over Thailand 30 years ago. It's cheap, A/C isn't automatically included with every room, and I'm sure that if the walls could talk they would have lots of intersting stories.

The part of town it is in located is one that I was more familiar with as a single man in Hat Yai. The area is pretty lively at night and there is plenty going on.

Guest Comments:

  • A rather old hotel, that's somewhat run down, but for 350 baht I found it to be a better value than most of the 600-700 baht hotels that I've stayed at in Hat Yai. The room was fine, a bit rundown but not exceptionally so. Hot water and no wifi, I'd stay here again. (September 2011)

Comments: Stereotyping nationalities isn't very fair but it seems that certain traits are common with people from certain countries. As an example, when Germans come to Thailand they must stay near, or on, the beach. I heard this fact years ago from someone in the travel business and it seems to be true from my observations.

The Malaysians coming to Hat Yai like to stay right in the centre of town, that is, within spitting distance of Lee Gardens Plaza. To have a successful business in Hat Yai, it must be within a very small area in the centre of town if it depends on tourism. If it is just a short distance outside that area it will most likely fail.

Hotels a little way from the centre of town, in my humble opinion, offer much better value for money. The distances we are talking about are not huge but you need to be prepared to walk a little.

The Tanaphat Hatyai Hotel is one such hotel, a little way from the centre of town. It is a pleasant, smaller hotel and the rooms actually resemble hotel rooms rather than 'guest house' rooms. The staff are very friendly.

It is located right on Suphasarnrangsan Road so there are many eating options just yards away. Lee Gardens is about a ten minute walk away or a few minutes in a tuk-tuk.

Guest Comments:

  • The hotel was not full even though all the hotels in central Hat Yai were not available for the period from 9th till 10th July. This must be due to the fact that any hotels further than New Season are considered too far.

The manager or owner was at the front desk when I arrived and the whole affair of obtaining a room was quick. I had a room on the 6th floor, the room was sound-proofed from the street below. The TV channels were again similar to VC Apartment's and like most hotels now, you can watch Fox, Universal Studios and a channel from Malaysia.

Only 1 complimentary bottled or should I say that plasticky water container. Everything worked, the standing shower had cold/hot controls, 2 towels, 2 bars of soap and shampoo. There was a balcony and a round small table with a chair. The lighting was mostly subdued and the wifi was actually pay per hour at 20 bht per hour.

The lobby is simple and very quiet, not a single whorist around and the area around it is just facing Supharasangan road. The bed was not hard but your body do sink into it. The 2 pillows were too soft for my liking so if one wants to read on the bed .. it is not ideal at all. The cupboard and the smaller cabinet just under the television are very sufficient for a few days stay.

There are 2 power sockets, one at the in-house or in-hotel phone and another just at the writing table. Suprahasangan road tends to be busy but I did not hear any rowdy road races that night and also the sliding window was built well to soundproof any noise. Parking is ample for 20-25 cars and I parked my rented Honda just beside the main building.

The front desk girl working in the evening was friendly .. to sum it up .. Thanaphat is not often fully booked because it is not affiliated with any tour agencies in Hat Yai and it will remain so that way and I am sure just like VC Apartments, it might be fully booked every week but just maybe due to the distance, rooms can still be had. (July 2011)

Comments: A long-term stay 'Mansion' building, close to the bus station and the weekend night market. It is also close to Thungsao Mansion and Chudchada Place, both of which, in my humble opinion, offer better value for money. Facilities in all of these places are basically the same (TV with UBC, fridge, wireless Internet, hot water) but a fridge and TV will cost you Bt1,000 a month more here compared to the other two I mentioned. Wireless Internet access is free.

It is located only a matter of yards away from the bus station and the night market which runs from Thursday to Sunday. Rooms are also available on a daily basis which might be handy for someone catching an early bus out of Hat Yai.

Comments: Terrace View is a lot more upmarket than the majority of Hat Yai apartment buildings without being too expensive. I stayed there for five years.

It is located conveniently near the Hat Yai Bangkok hospital, Carrefour, Lotus and Mor Or. Terrace View has a contract with the Hat Yai Bangkok hospital for staff accommodation and many of the residents are therefore doctors and nurses.

Most people staying there are quiet, respectable, professional people but during my stay I had to put up with some really obnoxious neighbours on a few occasions. When this happens, unfortunately, the Thai staff do not know how to deal with the problem.

Being woken up every night at 3am by a Coyote dancer returning home from work and fighting and screaming with another Thai girl can make your life pretty miserable.

However, if you are lucky and have good neighbours it is a great place to stay. The rooms are clean, pleasant, well furnished and a decent size. Fridges and TVs are not supplied. You can either buy your own or rent these things from the apartment.

There is a laundry room with washers and dryers, a filtered drinking water machine, a minimart, and a full service laundry. All rooms have access to Wi-Fi Internet.

The normal rooms are all the same size but those with a better view are more expensive (Bt5,500 or Bt6,000). Rooms on the second floor have a terrace outside, which is very pleasant, and these rooms cost Bt6,500.

There are a limited number of suites with two rooms and a kitchen counter. These are very comfortable and suite residents also get a reserved car parking space. Originally these were Bt14,000 per month but I think the price went down to Bt13,000.

There is parking on the ground floor and also next door. A few years ago there were always free car parking spaces but with so many residents having cars now it can sometimes be difficult finding a space.

There is 24 hour security consisting of security guards and CCTV monitoring. Terrace View attracts wealthier residents than most apartment buildings and some years ago it was being targeted by criminals.

The girl staying next door to me had her room broken into and the thief beat her up and attempted to rape her as well as stealing money and other things.

After that, Terrace View beefed up the security. All rooms were fitted with burglar bars, more CCTV cameras were installed, and external lighting was added outside the building. It's OK now but remember always to keep your burglar bars locked.

I thoroughly recommend it. The building itself is great, the general staff are friendly, and the management are very switched on and helpful.
