Thai Cultural Behaviour Tip Thailand has always shown a great deal of tolerance towards other religions, going right back to the reign of King Rama IV. Even if Thais disagree ("What you teach people to do is admirable but what you teach them to believe is foolish"), they still respect other people's beliefs. |

Places of Worship in Hat Yai Compared to many provincial towns in Thailand, Hat Yai can claim residents and visitors who represent quite a variety of nationalities and religions. As might be expected in Thailand, the majority of the people in Hat Yai are Thai Buddhists. However, a large proportion of Hat Yai residents are ethnic Chinese and many visitors from Malaysia and Singapore are also Chinese. Many are Buddhist but Buddhism in Hat Yai comes in several different flavours. Mixed in with Thai Theravada Buddhism are elements of Taoism, Confucianism, Hinduism and even Mahayana Buddhism from Vietnam. Western Christians and missionaries are active in the town, and there are also quite a lot of Filipino teachers working in Hat Yai who, like most Filipinos, subscribe to Spanish Catholicism. In addition, being located in the deep south of Thailand near the Malaysian border, there is a large Muslim population. Thus, there are several mosques in the area, including the impressive Songkhla province central mosque. As with everything else on this site, I have not attempted to cover every single entity. I just do not have the time. I have started to list some places of worship and I will add more at a later date.
