Background

In 1997 I visited Thailand for the first time with a buddy and we met a Thai man who had emigrated to the United States, but was on vacation back in Thailand. Being able to speak English and Thai, he became our tour guide.

We kept in touch and even as I write in February 2018 we still keep in touch. In fact, he will come to stay at my house in Thailand this Friday.

At the time he was working for the Patagonia Clothing Company in Ventura, California. I was young, free, single and had plenty of disposable income so travelled quite a lot. I paid him a visit in California.

The company he worked for was very environmentally conscious and Patagonia staff enjoyed the outdoors. My visit coincided with a company tree planting expedition in Sequoia National Park and I went along.

It was good fun and felt good doing something useful for the environment, even though I didn't shower for several days. We had thousands of saplings, which we planted after making holes in the ground with augers.
