Buildings in Thailand with long term rooms for rent are normally referred to as 'Mansions' despite the fact many of them are definitely not 'mansion-like'. In recent years there has been a trend in Bangkok for building very luxurious, expensive accommodation at the top end of the market.
Plush, spacious, high-rise condos with terraces, swimming pools and gyms might be suitable for expats working for large multi-national companies with fat expense accounts but are probably beyond the means of most English teachers.
I have included a selection of accommodation below in all price ranges. This information was obtained from various on-line sources and the classified section of Thai English-language newspapers.
Bear in mind that the vast majority of apartment buildings in Thailand are not advertised on the Internet (they aren't advertised anywhere actually). The ones that tend to have an Internet presence are generally the expensive places that are looking to find rich, foreign clients.
The best thing to do if you are looking for a place to stay in Thailand is first to travel to Thailand. This is very important and can't be overstressed.
Check into a hotel for a week or two, put on your most comfortable walking shoes and hit the streets. Keep your eyes open for buildings that look like they have rooms for rent and talk to people - both locals and expats.
In other countries I would look at the classifieds first to find a place to stay, but in Thailand everything works differently. Word of mouth and local knowledge count most in the Land of Smiles.
I know we all like to try to arrange everything from the comfort of our homes before we travel using the Internet but finding a decent room in Thailand at the right price requires some legwork I'm afraid.

The high-rise, luxury condo boom continues in Bangkok with a new 66-storey building which will be the tallest residential building in the city. At the time of writing (April 2006), it is still being built and I can't find any rates but no doubt it will be very expensive. The developers are from Singapore, a tiny but rich country that seems to be buying up Thailand wholesale - with a little help from Khun Thaksin.
