Hat Yai Bicycle Shops
Crazes In Thailand
Since I moved to Thailand in 2003 I have seen many crazes. The first major one was for Jatukham Ramathep amulets, around 2006, I think. People were going crazy for these amulets, one poor woman was stampeded to death in Nakhon Sri Thammarat when a batch of new amulets was issued, and shops were opening everywhere selling amulets. Even pharmacies started selling amulets alongside headache tablets and condoms.
After a while the craze died out and all the amulet shops then closed. Since then, however, other crazes have occurred and the same series of events occurs. It's all so predictable. I remember a big craze for real hair extensions and every Thai female wanted to get a hair extension. Lots of shops opened, but then the craze died out and all the shops closed.
The last major craze was cycling - around 2016, I think. As with every craze in Thailand, lots of shops opened to satisfy demand for the trend and, additionally, lots of cycling lanes were created.
For a while the shops did well but gradually (as people lost interest in cycling) they started to close one-by-one. I've also noticed that a lot of the cycling lanes have disappeared. The local municipality planted plastic green posts in the roads to make separate bicycle lanes, but now these have been removed.
I wrote this page at the height of the craze when there were lots of bicycle shops but, as you will see, a lot of those shops have now closed.
I'm just wondering now what the next big craze will be in Thailand?

Comments: After lots of bicycle shops opened during Thailand's cycling craze, I predicted that many would close shortly afterwards. My prediction wasn't wrong. I'm not psychic, but for as long as I have lived in Thailand I have seen this type of thing many times.
There is a sudden craze for something and in order to cash in on the craze lots of shops open to satisfy demand. However, as soon the craze ends most of the newly opened shops then close because there is no business.

Comments: Hatyai Speedplay stocks some of the 'works of art' that I mentioned above. These bikes are so beautifully engineered that it seems a shame to take them out on dirty roads. Some of the models cost in excess of Bt120,000, but they also stock bikes that are a lot cheaper.

Comments: This shop is quite a long way from the town centre. If you leave town through Hat Yai Nai and turn left to go to the airport it is on the Airport Road just as you turn.
It is quite large and well stocked with different kinds of bikes from various manufacturers and also some children's bikes. The quality of the bikes is good and the prices are reasonable.
After visiting several shops for a bicycle for my daughter, I ended up buying one here because it was the best quality for the best price.

Comments: Whenever there is a craze in Thailand (as there often are) lots of shops open, but then many close as the craze fizzles out. After the cycling craze hit Thailand many new bicycle shops opened, but I suspected that quite a few would close when the craze started to fizzle out. That's exactly what happend with this one.

Comments: This place also strings tennis racquets so it is the place to go if you play tennis and require a certain tension in your racquet. They stock some nice Java bikes.

Comments: This shop had some nice bikes, but while walking past in July 2020 I saw it had closed. A sign outside says it has moved to another location, but the new location isn't clear.

Comments: This shop sold Vespa scooters and it also stocked an excellent range of pedal-powered bikes. They had some beautiful Bianchi road machines and also folding bikes from Chevrolet and Louis Garneau.
However, like many Hat Yai businesses, it suddenly closed one day. The biggest problem running this website is trying to keep the information up to date because new places open and old places close all the time.
I don't know why Vespiario closed, but there is another Vespa dealer in Hat Yai and lots of bicycle shops. I see very few Vespa scooters on the roads, so with a limited market they were probably difficult to sell.
Someone told me that the business has moved elsewhere and it is now called All Wheel Ride, but I'm not sure where it is exactly and I'm not sure what is sold. If I find out I will add the information here.
There used to be another bicycle shop in Hat Yai called All Wheel Ride (see above), but it also closed.
