Comments: This small guesthouse is located immediately next door to Central Festival and is just behind Z Sleep Hotel.

The room rate is reasonable and it is the ideal location if your primary reason for visiting Hat Yai is to shop at Central Festival.

The room rate for small rooms is Bt550, or you can get a larger room for Bt650.

An alternative accommodation option just a few yards away for a similar room rate is Hasu Guesthouse.

Comments: Located close to Baan Tidtaa, this place is similar in that it is in a quiet location just behind Sri Nakorn school.

It's fairly small with just 32 rooms, some of which are air-conditioned. Baan Tidtaa and this place might appeal to someone who favours tranquility over convenience.

One word of warning. Although it is quiet in the daytime, there is a bar located nearby and I'm not sure how noisy it might get at night as I have never actually stayed there overnight.

Comments: This is a pleasant building with bright, airy, comfortable, and relatively spacious rooms. The rooms made me feel comfortable straight away, which isn't always the case in Thailand.

Since I first found this place (circa 2003), the name (and function) of this place has changed. It used to be plain old Chaophaya Mansion and, as is usually the case with buildings called 'Mansions' in Thailand, rooms were rented out by the month.

It then became 'Chao Phya Grand Hotel' and in the transformation from 'Mansion' to 'Hotel' rooms started to be rented out by the night.

The location is a little way out of town, next to Rosa Plaza where coach loads of Malaysian tour groups arrive each day to buy tourist trinkets. Thammanoonvithi Road (I've used the same spelling as the business card) is where you will find Hat Yai's nightlife and there are plenty of evening entertainment venues nearby. Getting into town from Chaophaya Mansion is about a 15 minute walk.

When I first went to look (many years ago) there was no Internet access, but I believe that there is now. In fact, these days it is rare that any accommodation service doesn't offer Wi-Fi Internet access.

Since it became a hotel, rooms can now be booked on-line. Use one of the links below to get current room rates.

  • There is wireless internet now and it is a decent connection. There's somewhat of a problem with tiny ants crawling around everywhere but they are harmless. The owner is a sweetheart and will do almost anything to accomodate you. (November 2011)

Comments: In the same way that many so-called 'Mansions' in Thailand are very unmansionlike, the Chateau in Hat Yai bears absolutely no resemblance at all to a large country house in the French countryside.

However, if you need a cheap place to stay in the centre of Hat Yai it could be a great choice. Accommodation rates in Hat Yai have soared in recent years and whereas it used to be quite easy to find somewhere to stay for Bt300 a night, it is becoming increasingly difficult.

The Chateau has 20 rooms. The Bt300 rooms can accommodate two people and the Bt400/Bt500 rooms can accommodate three people. It's not super luxurious and it only has basic facilities, but the location is central and it looks fairly clean and secure.

Every room has A/C, which isn't always the case with many cheap guest houses. If you are searching for the cheapest room possible, you will normally find that it only has a fan. Hat Yai is hot all year round and during many parts of the year A/C isn't an option, it is essential.

Comments: This accommodation option is a LOT different to the normal tourist class hotels in Hat Yai. For starters, it's not in Hat Yai. It's roughly 15km from Hat Yai, off the section of Route 4 that goes to the Malaysian border.

It's right in the middle of a heavily forested area and quite high on a hill. The drive up and down is one of the steepest roads I have ever driven on. Most modern cars will be able to negotiate the road, but less confident drivers may not feel brave enough to drive themselves. In that case, you can park your car at the bottom and the resort staff will come to collect you in their pickup truck.

The accommodation consists of basic huts on stilts with good views of the forest. There are single rooms with shared toilets and family rooms that sleep up to six people. The resort has a restaurant and there is a wood fired pizza oven. You don't need to be a guest to eat at the restaurant.

As you might expect in this location, people stay here to get closer to nature. There are none of the things that you will find in downtown Hat Yai. There are meeting and conference rooms, and the resort offers meditation and detox retreats. There are also some activities for children, such as clay modelling.

The resort grows most of the food used in the restaurant and organises guided walks for guest to learn more about local herbs and plants. No alcohol is allowed on the resort, apart from wine with your meal.

Check in time is from 14:00 to 18:00 and you must check out before 13:00. Because of the remoteness of the resort and difficulty for guest without their own transport the resort can arrange airport transfers and taxis.

You can book directly with the resort paying by bank transfer, or you can use an on-line travel agency such as Agoda if you wish to pay by credit card.

Just one word about safety. The resort is perched very high and there are some extremely steep drops. My four year-old tends to run around with no sense of danger at all and I was quite nervous about him. If you have young children you need to keep a close eye on them.

Comments: The old Racha Hotel was closed for a complete refurbishment and after it was finished at the end of 2013 or early in 2014 the hotel was renamed China Garden. It looks fine, the location is good in the heart of the downtown area, and it isn't that expensive.

The hotel brochure says they offer a transfer service to three local golf courses and that they can take Muslim guests to restaurants where Halal food is available. This is fine but, to be honest, any hotel in Hat Yai can arrange these things if you ask reception. All hotel receptionists know taxi drivers who can provide these things for their guests.

Comments: This hotel opened in January 2017. Thais are always desperate to open new businesses as quickly as possible, often before things are properly finished. When I went to take a look there was an 'Open' sign on the door, but there were still lots of workers on site and a cement truck outside.

The hotel is located between the Only One massage shop and Legacy Guest House (opposite the Chinese Hakka Association building). This location is very close to Lee Gardens Plaza and the downtown area.

There are over 60 rooms and they are clean and orderly because it is a brand new hotel. Rooms have the standard LCD TV, air-conditioning, warm water shower and Wi-Fi, which all hotels in Thailand have these days. There don't appear to be any additional facilities beyond these basics. As with most hotels, you can choose to have a double bed or two single beds.

Comments: When I first visited Thailand in 1987 (before the days of mass tourism in Thailand) there were lots of hotels like this one. Nowadays, they are becoming quite rare. International tourists want tourist-class hotels and these old-style Thai hotels are gradually fading away. Whenever I come across a hotel like this it makes me feel quite nostalgic.

The Chok Amnuay Hotel is located in a fairly quiet road opposite the entrance to the Friendship Unity Hospital. There are lots of small eateries nearby and it only takes 10-15 minutes to walk to Lee Gardens, depending on how fast you walk.

These hotels don't represent the ultimate in luxury, but these days it is very difficult to find a bed for the night in Hat Yai for this price without staying in a backpacker guesthouse or a youth hostel.

Chudchada Place (★★.5)

Comments: Chudchada Place is primarily a long stay residence but there are rooms they rent out on a hotel basis by the day. Thungsao Road is close to the bus station. It's a seedy and not very attractive area but this place is in a fairly quiet Soi.

It looked quite reasonable. The rooms have TVs with UBC, fridges, hot water, built-in furniture and Internet access. There is CCTV security (though I'm not sure about a security guard) and a carpark. All the rooms are the same but those on higher floors are Bt200 a month more expensive.

Overall, I would say it represents good value for money.

Comments: City Park is located almost next to Carrefour on the busy Phetkasem Road but set back a little way from the road so traffic noise isn't too bad. This is a fairly typical Hat Yai mid-price hotel but because it is a little way from the centre of town it doesn't get many tourists. It might suit people who prefer a quieter environment compared to downtown Hat Yai.

The hotel has a restaurant and this becomes a kind of lounge in the evening where you can listen to pretty Thai girls singing. Like many other Hat Yai hotels, this one also has a massage shop on the premises.

Being next to Carrefour, it is handy for shopping and there are all kinds of public transport options on the busy Phetkasem Road just a few yards away. It is as easy to get a minivan or bus to Songkhla in one direction as it is to get a sawng-thaew to downtown Hat Yai in the other.

Comments: As I write (July 2012) this is the latest hotel to open in Hat Yai. It opened in June 2012. The hotel is located in quite a good area overlooking a canal. It's in a quiet location, but there are lots of restaurants and massage shops nearby and it's also a fairly short stroll to Lee Gardens Plaza.

The Color Hotel is close to the BP Grand Tower, Sing Golden Place and Garden Home hotels.

Overall there are 76 rooms and there are two types of room. These are exactly the same except that one type has a shower in the bathroom and the other has a bathtub. There is a promotion rate running at the moment that will run until the beginning of 2013.

With the promotion rate, rooms with a shower are Bt900 and if you want a bathtub you have to pay an additional Bt100. Both types of room are available with either one double bed or two singles - the price is the same.

The rooms are pleasantly furnished and have personal safes.

Thai hotel rooms in this price range tend to be very similar. What makes a difference is the age of the hotel. Older hotels get tatty after a few years and additionally Hat Yai hotels have another problem.

Most guests are from Malaysia and many Malaysians tend to be rabid smokers. In older hotels there isn't a piece of furniture, carpet or bedsheet that doesn't suffer from cigarette burns. The rooms also smell of stale smoke.

If you object to this you can ask for a non-smoking but many hotels don't have any and, even if they did, inconsiderate smoking guests would just ignore the no smoking rule.

Enjoy the Color Hotel while everything is brand spanking new. It won't last that way forever.

Guest Comments:

  • I insisted on keeping my passport and paid a deposit of 600 baht to the front desk which is actually the only complaint about staying here. I was put on the 3rd floor facing the area around The Garden Home Hotel and I rate this hotel on a scale out of 10, I give it 8 points. The room was immaculate, everything worked out fine and I have decided to put this hotel as first on my list if and when I decide to spent a night in Hat Yai.

There were ample sockets for me to charge my net book, hand phones and my I pod dock. The lights were easily controlled from just behind us on the bed. There was a quaint but handy working desk just beside the LCD Tv and there were 2 complimentary bottled water in the fridge. The bathroom was spacious, the lighting too and the wi-fi was good. I even used the computer in the lobby which was also fast and there were no bother from the staff.

I was impressed with the fact that you can connect to the free wi fi with no restrictions so I was able to connect to the internet using both my netbook and ipod touch. The signal was fast, even in the lobby the hotel provided 2 desktop computers which I used to without any time constraint. There was also 1 three pin socket in respect to us from Malaysia to use which was a nice touch. Complimentary coffee is provided from 0700 till 1000 hrs so it was a pleasant gesture.

The room was not musty, I love watching the telly as they had about 65 channels and all the prog from France Japan and China had the English version. Some channels were fuzzy but it will be sorted out in the near future. BP hotels owns this chain as the toileteries are still using the BP logo. The lighting in the room was great. The safe deposit box was very modern and the bathroom with the water pressure was top notch. The bed and mattress were just perfect.

I checked out on the 27th and it was a quick exit without any questions about consuming this or that. I will try out the 1000 baht room on my next visit on the 5th floor. I am not sure what the fuss was about the comments first posted but maybe certain people are used to a 4 stars or 5 stars hotel thus the complaints but for me, Hat Yai is just a brief stop over and for 900 baht, it is still a good deal. I will be back. (August 2012)

  • Service no good and floor mat we clean the floor when we check out ask to paid my friend never drink the water also ask to paid call to ask every thing don't have and not clean.

Its floor mat and room very warm when we went in and had house fly but the room cleaner said Singaporean very dirty when saw basin wet. I not sure is there a rule floor mat dirty we had to paid.

Water also very dirty, ask hot water had to wait very long, no room service, no laundry and I had back pain ask for extra pillow also cannot. (August 2012)

Comments: The building was completed in 2008 but stood empty for several months before Cosy Place was opened for business. As you can see from the photo, it is a large apartment building.

It is located on a part of Thammanoonvithi Road where there are several bars and also the plushest bath and massage house in Hat Yai. This is very handy if you suddenly feel the urge for an assisted bath with a pretty young Thai girl.

Rooms cost Bt5,000 a month and are fairly similar apart from a few that are a little larger. Rooms have A/C, and bathrooms have water heaters. This sounds obvious but it isn't always the case in provincial Thailand.

There is a water charge of Bt150 per month and electricity is charged at Bt6 per unit. An Internet connection is available for Bt400 per month. There is also a 24 hour security guard service which is quite important in Hat Yai.

There is a web site, and it seems to work (provided you can read Thai).
