Dental Clinics in Hat Yai

Introduction

If you have problems with your teeth, you could be in far worse places than Hat Yai. In fact, Hat Yai is one of the best possible places you could be anywhere in the world.

Monks at the Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai, Thailand

Monks at the Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai, Thailand

There is a big emphasis on all branches of medicine at the Prince of Songkla University, including dentistry. The Faculty of Dentistry at the university is very good and turns out excellent dentists year after year.

There are several treatment clinics within the faculty and this is one option open to you. The choice of dentist is yours; to save money you can let a graduate dentist look at your teeth or you can opt for a fully experienced dentist.

There is a large private dental facility known as Dentalland on Rajyindee Road. It's much larger than a clinic, but not quite in the same league as the Prince of Songkla University.

In addition, there are lots of small clinics around Hat Yai. These places are small but the expertise level of the dentists is the same as at the large places.

For some reason, lots of Hat Yai dentists tend to be women. Maybe this is because girls are generally better students than boys? I don't know. What I do know is that they are excellent.

When I arrived in Hat Yai at the end of 2003 my teeth were in a mess, despite paying out lots of money in the UK to be treated by the main partner at a UK dental practice.

I underwent quite a lot of treatment in Hat Yai (it helped that I worked at the Faculty of Dentistry for several years) and now my teeth have never been better.

It is rare to have to wait very long for an appointment, the work is done to a very high standard, and prices are very cheap. For some fillings I have only had to pay Bt200.

If you are in need of having sufficient dental work carried out, the money you can save by having the work performed in Thailand will pay for a free vacation.

Procedures such as the fitting of titanium implants are very expensive in the West, but only a fraction of the cost in Thailand.

Dental Implants

I have received quite a few queries about getting dental implants done in Hat Yai. I don't have any personal experience, but it is something that I am interested in.

I spoke to my regular dentist about this and although she can fit implants she doesn't have the necessary facilities in her small dental clinic. I have one missing molar; it doesn't show when I smile, but I have often thought about getting an implant fitted to fill the gap.

She recommended going to the Prince of Songkla Dental Faculty, where she used to work, to get implants done. Dentalland, which is quite a big place, can also do dental implants. The price I was quoted at Dentalland in 2024 was Bt70,000 for a dental implant.

I will try to get some prices and more information to post here.

Language

Dentist sign, Hat Yai - Click for larger image To find a dentist, all you really need to know is the Thai for dentist, as shown in the photo here.

ทำฟัน

tum fun (tum = to do; to make; to work and fun = tooth/teeth)

In Thai there are always similar sounding words for different nouns and verbs, and different sounding words for the same nouns and words.

tun is another word for tooth/teeth. I believe it is from Pali or Sanskrit. Dentists are referred to as mor fun (tooth doctor) or tun-dta-pairt.

Comments: Some dental clinics in Hat Yai are very new and modern, while others look decidedly dated. This clinic falls into the latter category.

The clinic is open from 10:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays.

Patient Comments:

  • The friendly old couple dentist gave me warm welcoming impression when I first step in to their small and compact dentist clinic (trust me, it is not easy to notice it is dental clinic from the shop exterior).

Honestly, my first choice was selecting other modernize clinic with better remarks such as dr korn, dr thongtip, etc (no luck, they didn't operate during Chinese New Year holiday) even though I lodged in nearest hotel (Asian hotel), 1 street away 5 min short distance walk to bunjung clinic.

Chinese speaking Dr bunjung couple handle my teeth very gentle, proper checking asking me to take tooth filling service follow up with a regular tooth cleansing service.

The dental facilities are very old type, functional for minor operation. Both dentists are very experience old couple (50-60 years old). My feeling during the operation was slow and steady; practical and efficient (I'm heavy smoker and coffee drinker, hence thick stained teeths) it finally restore 70-75% of cleanliness of my purified teeths.

Spent total dutantion 30-45 min for one tooth filling, another 25-35 min cleansing.

Ok, total charges 2000 baht (they mention discounted price) *1000 baht for tooth filling (they claimed very difficult job and it needs to be proper mold both sides of the wisdom tooth. **1000 baht for tooths cleansing

Quality of service I would rate 5 out of 10 in view of the skill however poor facilities

I find the damage is slightly expensive than from my country, Kuala Lumpur city of Malaysia. Rate 6.5 out of 10

I tried wisdom tooth extraction and cleansing in Thailand, Bangkok about 3500bht (2800 + 700), quality of service rate 7 out of 10

I tried the similar services (tooth extraction, filling & cleansing) at SINGAPORE by young Lady/ apprentice dr, the charges are much more expensive, double of the damage in Hat Yai. Quality of service: rate 5 out of 10

    • Tooth extraction (normal) - usd 85
    • Tooth extraction (wisdom tooth) - usd 100
    • Tooth cleansing (standard) - usd 55

Will try to sell you other service and it usually come with other micellaneos charges such as tooth paste, strings etc (February 2014)

Comments: This small dental clinic is located right in the heart of Hat Yai's famous Gim Yong market, just behind the fruit and food stalls.

The receptionist let out a gasp of astonishment when she saw that a farang had entered the premises. This rather gave me the impression that she wasn't used to dealing with foreigners.

However, I'm sure the dentist working there (like most Thai doctors and dentists) can speak English reasonably well.

The clinic is open from 10:00 to 19:00 from Thursday to Tuesday and closed on Wednesdays.

Dentalland

Dentalland, Hat Yai - Click for larger image

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: Dentalland is a little like the dental equivalent of one of the large private hospitals in Hat Yai. It's a large facility with quite a few staff. It's clean and professional, but the extra overheads of running and staffing such a big facility result in higher prices. Looking at some Google reviews, there are comments about it being expensive. Despite knowing about Dentalland since at least 2008, I only visited for the first time in early 2024. I wanted a broken filling replaced, but was told that the tooth was decayed and should be extracted. The extraction cost was around Bt1,000. To replace the tooth I was given the option of a bridge for around Bt45,000 or an implant for Bt70,000. Looking at some prices online for implants in Thailand, this seems a little high.

Dentalland is open every day of the week from 9:00am until 7:30pm.

Glai Mor Fun

Glai Mor Fun, Hat Yai - Click for larger image

Address: 226/25 Suphasarnrangsan Road, Hat Yai, Songkhla, 90110
Telephone: +66 (0)74 235263
Map: Map 2

Latitude: N 07° 00' 31.6" (N 07° 00.527')

Longitude: E 100° 28' 33.1" (E 100° 28.551')

Comments: Mor Fun means dentist (literally 'Doctor tooth/teeth). Glai, depending on the tone, means near or far - in this case, near.

Dr Ornanong Garnjanopaat studied dentistry at Mahidol (one of the top universities in Thailand), completed an M.Sc. at the University of London and then undertook further training at the University of Sheffield where she also worked at a dental practice to gain experience. Thus, her English is very good.

She is originally from Bangkok but moved to Hat Yai. Thais who study overseas on government scholarships have to work at a government university when they return to Thailand for twice as long as they studied abroad. When she returned to Thailand she worked at the Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai and then stayed in the town, where she later opened her own clinic.

Her speciality is prosthetics. She used to fit dental implants, but stopped because she doesn't have all the facilities in her small clinic. She recommends the Prince of Songkla University dental faculty for implants and told me that an implant costs around Bt50,000.

The clinic is open from 09:00 to 16:00 from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays.

Patient Comments:

  • She does the best cleaning I have had here for sure. But I don't think I would go back to her again because it hurts. She pulls on my lip and digs away and her assistant is not gentle with the sucker machine. I had to swallow and cough and sat up at one point. Just too hard to endure. She is looking at one tooth for a possible crown and I guess that would be OK. I mean I do trust her for sure. But the pain is too much, worse than last time. (January 2016)
  • Dr Ornanong Garnjanopaat is an older lady who must have years of experience behind her and she oozes a quality that Westerners refer to as 'bedside manner'. She has a genuinely kind face and she is a genuinely kind lady. I felt reassured by her words and actions, and after a short time in the chair I felt very confident about her as a dentist.

I had been suffering from quite severe toothache and saw another dentist who failed to identify the problem correctly and filled a trouble-free tooth. I didn't go back to see her because I didn't like the way that she chatted to her assistant the whole time she was working on my tooth. I decided to see Dr Ornanong instead.

Dr Ornanong identified the problem tooth by the presence of a crack in the tooth. This was confirmed with an X-Ray. The crack was underneath an existing filling and the tooth had become infected. It was very painful.

She asked if I wanted to keep the tooth or if I wanted her to extract it for me. I told her that I wanted to keep it.

She removed the old filling and started the preparation for root canal treatment and the fitting of a crown. The infection had got quite bad and this was one of the most painful sessions I have ever spent in a dentist's chair. However, she was very careful, she understood the pain I was experiencing, and did her best to keep the pain to a minimum.

As a result of studying in the UK, she speaks good English and if you tell her something in English you know that she understands.

The first session to relieve the pain and start the root canal treatment was Bt1,000. The root canal treatment took another three sessions, at Bt900 per session. It took two final sessions to prepare and fit the crown. The cost for the final two sessions, including the cost of the crown, was Bt7,000. The total cost was therefore Bt10,700.

I highly recommend this dentist. (August 2013)

Comments: This clinic is run by Dr Chomanut, who works at Hat Yai hospital. She is another lady dentist, which seems to be the case for about 90% of the dentists in Thailand. Thailand's female dentists are excellent. She can perform most kinds of dental work, but her speciality is root canal treatment.

Some of Hat Yai's older dental clinics look really ancient because of the old-fashioned furnishings and equipment. This one is a complete contrast and looks ultra-modern. Everything is very new and the clinic has a bright and airy feeling to it.

From Monday to Friday the clinic opens from 07:00 to 08:00 in the morning and again from 17:00 to 20:00 in the evening. On Saturday it is open from 08:30 to 20:00 and it is closed on Sunday.

Patient Comments:

  • I went to see Dr Chomanut about a toothache that kept coming and going. After some initial diagnosis followed by an X-Ray she decided that the gum was the problem and not the tooth. She carried out a thorough cleaning, descaling and irrigation. Her work was very good and the price was reasonable. She is quietly spoken and her English, although not fluent, is certainly good enough to be able to ask foreign patients about their dental problems. Recommended. (November 2016)
