Comments: Paragon was located at the end of Thamanoonvithi Road near the Prince of Songkhla University. It was quite a way from the central tourist district, but it looked like a fairly decent place.

I added it in 2014, but when I was going through the process of updating this site in 2019 I couldn't find it. It now looks to be closed.

Comments: I seem to remember one correspondent referring to the area around Daiichi hotel as "Hat Yai's happening area". There are a lot of Thai girls, Chinese Malaysian males, massage shops and Karaoke joints. The one thing you won't find in any of the Karaoke places is anyone singing.

Everyone wants a piece of the massage action in Hat Yai and there are lots of independent shops to cater for the demand from Malaysian and Singaporean tourists.

At the time of writing (July 2012), this place had been open for about a month. It's within spitting distance of Daiichi hotel.

Thai massage (2 hours): Bt300
Oil massage (2 hours): Bt600
Foot massage (1 hour): Bt300

Pimalai is open from 10am until 11pm.

Comments: The great thing about Thailand is that there is an enormous amount of choice with everything.

If you are sick, you can see a doctor very cheaply or stay in one of Thailand top private hospitals. If you want accommodation in Bangkok you can stay in an Bt80 backpacker dorm on the Khaosarn Road or you can stay at the Oriental, which is one of the top hotels in the world.

If you want a massage in Hat Yai you can get a basic massage for Bt200, or you can go to one of the fancy spas. There's an option for every budget.

Preuksa Spa falls in between the cheap massage shops and expensive spas. It's a spa experience for not much more than the cost of a regular massage. The staff have changed in recent years and now only Toy survives from the original gang I met several years ago.

For more information, see: Preuksa Spa

Customer Comments:

  • I read of this spa here and it sounded good enough to visit. I did the relaxation package for I think about 1000 baht. It consisted of a steam and massage. The facilities were nice, and the massage was good. Over all it was a great experience, and a good way to pass a couple hours in Hat Yai. I will return. (October 2012)
  • I tried their ancient thai massage with herbal ball. The masseur was very attentive and the massage was carried out well. The place is clean and the massage was worth its price. Will visit again if I go to Hat Yai for a holiday. (September 2012)

Qingren Health Massage

Qingren Health Massage, Hat Yai - Click for larger image

Address: Opposite Kosit Hotel, Niphat Uthit 2 Road
Telephone: +66 (0)74 354552
Mobile: +66 (0)86 959 9921

Latitude: N 07° 00' 00.6" (N 07° 00.011')

Longitude: E 100° 28' 15.2" (E 100° 28.254')

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: This place is fairly new; at least it wasn't around a couple of years ago when I was going for massages in Hat Yai frequently. It is located opposite the Kosit hotel.

Whenever I pass by it looks very quiet. A young girl aged 18 was working there, whose mother is a masseur at Sakura hotel. They come from Phayao province in the far north of Thailand. It isn't unusual for poor Thais to find work at the other end of the country in order to send money home.

Compared to Aladdin, underneath Kosit hotel, it is quite expensive. Perhaps this is why it is always so quiet? Two hours of Thai massage costs Bt300, one hour of foot massage Bt250, and one hour of oil massage Bt300.

On the other hand, the staff told me that you do actually get a full two hours, whereas at Aladdin you are lucky to get 90 minutes.

One of my pet hates in life is the transliteration of English words into Thai, and Thai words into the English.

The sign at the front of the shop says 'Qingren' and the business card says 'Qinren'. If you can read Thai, you will see that the Thai reads something like 'Ching Yern'. Transliteration is completely useless and is actually so misleading that it should be banned.

Rado Ancient Massage

Rado Ancient Massage, Hat Yai - Click for larger image

Address: 59 Sanehanusorn Road, Hat Yai, Songkhla, 90110
Telephone: +66 (0)74 355184
Map: Map 3

Latitude: N 07° 00' 12.2" (N 07° 00.203')

Longitude: E 100° 28' 18.0" (E 100° 28.300')

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: This is the in-house massage shop belonging to the Rado hotel.

In my single days when I used to go for massages all the time I remember going into this place a couple of times and then walking straight out again. The girls couldn't be bothered and the customer service was non-existent.

When I returned recently to get some information about the massage shop, things had improved. The 'captain' appeared to be polite and helpful. I hope it is always like this now because there were problems in the past.

Thai massage (2 hours): Bt250
Oil massage (2 hours): Bt600
Foot massage (1 hour): Bt250
Prostrate massage (15 minutes): Bt300

I know that some places offer a prostrate massage but it is normally offered some time during the massage. This was the first place that told me about the service when I was making general enquiries.

The captain used her hands to give me a very graphic description of what was involved. It looked quite painful.

Customer Comments:

  • Set up was quite a relevation as all the massage ladies were seated on that stage like setting without any screen so I was quite surprised with this sort of thing. an older lady who turned to be not the captain picked out the massage lady then urged me to take the ping pong package which I agreed and 1 hour of oil massage. the room was very basic and quite empty.. sliding door and the massage was not up to what I had expected so agreed with Phil about the lack of performance as I was given a head and shoulder rub down but she was quite okay with the tummy and prostate or ping pong massage. many fair ladies but you cannot ask them to do out-calls, not even if you are a guest in The Rado Hotel. the massage took about 50 minutes and I would give this place 4 out of 10. (August 2012)

Rungsuriya Thai Massage

Rungsuriya Thai Massage, Hat Yai - Click for larger image

Longitude: E 100° 28' 24.1" (E 100° 28.402')

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: Most massage shops in Hat Yai offer the same services at around the same price. The services normally offered are foot massage, traditional Thai massage, or oil massage. Beyond that, the spas and better massage shops offer aroma oil therapies and various body treatments.

Some places in Hat Yai that offer sexual services and, in between, there are massage shops that offer both regular massage and sexual services, although the sexual services on offer fall short of what is offered at the bath and sex (aap op nuat) places.

This massage shop is located next door to the Wiangpin Hotel, which has a well-known aap op nuat facility. When I called in to ask about prices I was offered a 'body-to-body' massage, which certainly isn't offered at most massage shops in Hat Yai.

The girl gave the impression that whatever service I wanted could be made available.

Saby Massage and J Spa

Saby Massage and J Spa, Hat Yai - Click for larger image

Address: Big C Extra, Phetkasem Road
Mobile: +66 (0)85 673 6161
Map: Map 2

Latitude: N 07° 01' 08.5" (N 07° 01.142')

Longitude: E 100° 29' 08.7" (E 100° 29.145')

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: This massage shop is located within the Big C Extra department store (formerly Carrefour). It's on the first floor if you come from the UK, or the second floor if you come from Thailand or the United States. You need to go out to the car park area to find it.

Most of the big department stores in Hat Yai have a massage shop on the premises and although there isn't much privacy the prices are cheaper.

I found the prices a little confusing. What's the difference between a Thai oil massage and an oil massage? And why is one more expensive than the other?

Here are some of their published prices. Additional treatments are offered and these prices may change over time:

Foot massage: Bt180 (1 hour)
Foot massage: Bt300 (1.5 hours)
Thai massage: Bt180 (1 hour)
Thai massage: Bt300 (1.5 hours)
Thai massage: Bt360 (2 hours)
Head massage: Bt220 (1 hour)
Thai oil massage: Bt360 (1.5 hours)
Thai oil massage: Bt390 (2 hours)
Oil massage: Bt450 (1.5 hours)
Oil massage: Bt550 (2 hours)
Aromatherapy massage: Bt450 (1 hour)
Aromatherapy massage: Bt850 (2 hours)
Ear spa: Bt200 (35 minutes)

The shop is open every day from 9am until 9pm.

With transliteration I normally use the same version that the business uses, no matter how bad it is. In this case it isn't great. I would imagine that most non-Thai people probably think that 'Saby' rhymes with baby.

The standard transliteration for this word is normally 'sabai', but I prefer to follow the Thai spelling and would write 'sabaay'.

Customer Comments:

  • While waiting for my car to be serviced, I had a few hours to kill and it wasn't worth going home. I walked around Big C Extra for a while, but still had time left over. My feet started to ache after all the walking and I decided to have a foot massage. The experience was surprisingly good.

The massage shops in downtown Hat Yai for Malaysian tourists vary a lot. They can be good, but sometimes they can be very poor. They get a constant stream of tourists and probably not too much repeat business. The service isn't always good.

I imagine that shops dealing mainly with locals get a lot more repeat business and therefore the service needs to be good in order to keep people coming back.

My masseuse gave an excellent foot massage, which resulted in me falling asleep. The pressure was just right. It wasn't tickly and she didn't inflict any pain with the wooden sticks that some other masseuses have done in the past.

Most tourist massage shops charge Bt300 or more for a foot massage. The charge here was a very reasonable Bt200. I tipped her, even though it seemed that she didn't expect a tip. My experience at barber shops is that local Thais don't usually tip.

The whole experience was very good and I will be going again. (May 2013)

Comments: This small shop closed some time early in 2016.

Over the years I've had lots of problems with bad massages, inattentiveness and a general lack of interest at massage shops in Hat Yai. This one was an exception. The three Isaan girls working there were always very attentive and gave a relaxing, caring massage. I was thus very disappointed to find that it had closed.

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: Sakura Ancient Massage Parlour is the in-house massage shop at the Sakura Hotel, NOT the Sakura Grand View Hotel.

The two hotels are just across the street from each other and massage prices are the same.

From the massage shop business card:

"New atmosphere and Classic design with beautiful-friendly and mild mannered masseuse. You can have our inside service or outside service."

This statement seems to imply that they accepts outcalls.

Thai massage, one course (1hr 45m): Bt300
Foot massage (1hr): Bt250
Oil massage (1hr): Bt350

Discount vouchers from nearby Sintavee Tour can also be used here. See details for Sayuri Ancient Massage.

Customer Comments:

  • Went for the oil massage and it was performed by a middle-age lady and it was a really excellent massage. Though the only complaint was the tv in the room and it kinda spoil the whole mood a bit. But the massage was nicely done, with the right amount of pressure and it was very relaxing.

Towards the end of the massage, I was offered the prostate for 200 THB and that was done quite professionally too, without a hint of sleaziness that is often associated with these sort of massages in Thailand - more like a manhood massage to restore a man's libido. No happy ending though. (July 2012)

  • If there is a choice between the massage at Sakura and the massage at Sayuri then I would have to choose Sakura as they have better experienced ladies. The rate has changed thus there are no more package A or B or C. I always choose the 2 hours oil massage for 600 baht and normally it is not that precise. I have received special service here offered by the ladies on the condition that that sum goes directly to them. There are not many lookers here but I did telephoned the manager once for an out-call massage in my hotel room but was refused, due to it's locality maybe?

The older ladies are better in their massage and at times will slyly concentrate on your lower region. Lately, all oil massage are done in the second floor leaving only Thai massage in the rooms near the reception. The oil massage are performed with only a curtain to separate from one customer from another. Also highly recommended. Be firm with the captain and choose your massage lady. She likes to decide on her own. Another good place for Thai or Oil Massage. (May 2012)

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: Sayuri Ancient Massage is the in-house massage shop at what used to be the Sakura Grand View Hotel, but is now the Yannaty Hotel. The massage girls can't do outcalls to hotels, as some other massage shop girls do. I'm not sure if they can give massages in rooms at the Sakura Grand View.

From the massage shop business card:

"Having 32 beautifully decorated rooms with 105 beds, you relax and release stress with attractive hostess having expertise in traditional thai massage."
Thai massage, one course (1hr 45m): Bt300
Foot massage (1hr): Bt250
Oil massage (1hr): Bt350

There is a small money changer/travel agent just around the corner that sells massage vouchers that can be used at both the Sakura and Sakura Grand View massage shops. Vouchers cost Bt260, thus saving you Bt40.

The agency is called Sintavee Tour. As you come out of the hotel, turn left and then left again. You will see the shop on the right.

Prices have gone up. When I used to go for regular massages at Sakura the shop price was Bt240 and you could buy vouchers for Bt200.

Customer Comments:

  • I used to stay here and use the massage service be it oil but mostly Thai massage. The younger ladies here are all fair skinned and hails from the North. There is no extra service and please do not insist. The rooms are very nice and cool thus you can spend a 2 hours Thai massage in a peaceful environment. There is only 1 lady who can perform the prostate massage and you can request the captain or the counter for her number. The captain at Sayuri keeps a tight rein on the ladies and so, there is no fooling around but at Sakura old, I do recall the older massage ladies will always offer a prostate massage. (May 2011)
  • One of the best i usually go is Sakura Grand. I usually get the massuer a older lady say about 45. They usually do a good job, about 1hour 45mins. It cost 300bt if you walk-in. Tip extra if she give you a good rub down. As for me i usually buy a voucher from JR Tour which is located just behind Novotel. You pay them only 260bt, (40bt cheaper) with the voucher, you present them to the massage counter. The rooms is clean and comfortable. My friend tried the oil massage 700bts for 2hours, told me it was good, i will try it the next time when i'm there.

Comments: The New Season is a fairly new hotel and the massage rooms are clean and comfortable.

Thai massage (1 hour 45 mins): Bt300
Oil massage (2 hours): Bt700
Foot massage (1 hour): Bt250
Back and shoulder massage (1 hour): Bt250

The massage shop is open from 8am until midnight.

Customer Comments:

  • Second visit here with a 4 hours short layover in Hat Yai. I requested to the counter about an ajarn or teacher for my 2 hours oil massage with a testicle massage at the end. I did not choose the lady yet the one that came only did the oil massage for 1 half then phoned the actual ajarn to do the jap kai sai. This shows the stupidity (sorry) of customer service here as in the first place, they could have picked her to do the 2 hours oil massage rather than pick out one that can do the oil but not the jap kai sai. All in all, I have noted the number of the ajarn but from my point of view, the staff at the counter are just rubbish who assumes that non Thais do not understand their language and was trying to be funny but dumb at the same time. (October 2014)
  • I go to New Season Hotel for massage, their set-up and ambience are more decent and presentable. New Season Hotel Massage its a nicer ambience, clean and gives a hygienically feel when one walks in the shop compared to others I have been. Here its not a standard 2 hours session massage like else where but a 1 hour and 45 mins session. I recommend oil massage here, why? When one goes for oil massage else where, the oil and smell will still stay on our body when the session is over and we leave the shop, but not here. After the oil massage session, we will be cleaned with lots warm towels to remove the oil and smell, serves us with hot tea before we parted. Most of the masseurs here I heard are good, my regular is Oom No.16. (2012)
  • I have only visited this place once last year and it must be one of the classiest and cleanest legal massage place in Hat Yai. The oil massage is performed on that stretcher bed which is a bit small and the massage lady will clean your whole body with a hot towel after the oil massage. If you request for a stomach massage, it will be for another 25 baht. There is no extra services provided and people come here for the massage and massage only. The mature lady that gave me an oil massage at New Season hotel was excellent yet that bunker bed is an irritant. (November 2011)

Silom Sauna

Silom Sauna, Hat Yai - Click for larger image

Address: Thammanoonvithee Road, Hat Yai, Songkhla, 90110
Telephone: +66 (0)74 261961
Map: Map 4

Latitude: N 07° 00' 19.4" (N 07° 00.323')

Longitude: E 100° 28' 58.7" (E 100° 28.978')

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: Silom Sauna is more than just a massage shop. There are sauna rooms (separated for men and women), a swimming pool, a fitness room with exercise machines, and Thai massage.

Instead of just going for a two hour massage, you can stay there all day or spend the morning or afternoon by the pool. After you have paid you can use the sauna room all day and free tropical fruit and drinking water are provided for guests.

This place has been around a long time and although there are several facilities, it isn't that plush. I used to go there fairly often many years ago and the massage girls offered some extra services for gentlemen. I don't know if that is still the case, but I expect that it is.

It's located quite a long way out of town near Haadyai City Church and opposite Nora Plaza, where the Malaysian sheep tourists on cheap package tours get taken by their bus drivers.

The sauna costs Bt200 for men and Bt150 for women. I didn't see a price for ladyboys. Thai massage costs Bt200 per hour and oil massage is Bt300 per hour.

Silom Sauna is open every day from 12:00 until 22:00.

Comments: Massage can mean so many things in Thailand, depending on where you go. In some places it's just a euphemism for sex, while at other places the massage you get is cheap but not very good. In the cheapest places the girls are more interested in watching TV and sending messages on their mobile phones than massaging customers, but what do you expect for Bt200?

Sittara Spa is very different. It is the kind of place that you find in the glossy tourist brochures that contain the best of everything that Thailand has to offer. The girls working there are elegant, refined, classy and really make sure that you have a great experience.

It's not cheap compared to other places in Hat Yai but it's a lot cheaper than you would pay in Phuket and certainly cheaper than massage spas in Western countries, or even in Malaysia and Singapore.

There are lots of treatments available and various packages on offer. I'll list a few here, but for the full range you need to contact or visit the spa.

Aromatherapy massage (75 minutes): Bt1,500
Swedish massage (75 minutes): Bt1,500
Thai traditional massage (2 hours): Bt650
Ayuraveda head massage (50 minutes): Bt1,800
Ayuraveda body massage (90 minutes): Bt2,300
Reflexology foot massage (50 minutes): Bt500
Aroma package (2.15 hours): Bt2,200
Swedish package (2.15 hours): Bt2,900

Blosson plus package (2 hours): Bt2,400
Spirit of Sittara (2.30 hours): Bt3,900

If you really want to indulge yourself, this is the place to go. And guys, there is definitely no hanky panky at this type of establishment so don't even think about it.

It is best to call ahead to make a reservation.
