Comments: In addition to the dedicated Thai massage shops in Hat Yai, there are lots of beauty salons that also offer foot massage. They have girls who wash, cut and blow-dry hair; girls who do manicures, pedicures and facial treatments; and a separate group of boys and girls who do foot massage.

A row of comfortable foot massage chairs along one of the walls indicates that foot massage is available.

The masseuses in these places don't tend to be uniformed, as they are in the dedicated massage shops. As I've stated elsewhere, they don't understand proper reflexology (don't be fooled by the fancy reflexology charts on the wall), but a good foot rub can feel good if you've been walking a lot.

This shop, Smile, is typical of the type of place I have just described. It is located in between New Season Hotel and VC Apartment.

Foot massage (1 hour): Bt200
Body massage (2 hours): Bt300
Oil massage (2 hours): Bt600

The shop is open from 8am until 10pm.

Comments: This spa was around for a long time, but whenever I walked past it never seemed to be doing any business. When I walked past again in January 2018 I saw that it was no longer there. I'm not sure when it closed, but the Malaysian tourist trade in Hat Yai has been quiet for a long time and the opening of Central Festival has taken a lot of tourists away from central Hat Yai. There have been quite a few casualties as a result of these two factors and I suspect there will be more.

Comments: Most Thai massage shops have 'Ancient' or 'Traditional' in their titles, but there is nothing ancient or traditional about them.

The majority of shops are aimed at tourists and the young girls working in them are from impoverished parts of the country who have only had a minimum of training.

These shops have only been around since mass tourism took a hold in Thailand, around 30 years ago or so.

The traditional places still exist, but there aren't actually that many of them and they tend to be outside of the tourist areas. They often have communal massage rooms, and to lie on there might not be anything more than a mat on the floor.

The masseuses are normally older and have lots of experience. I'm not criticising the massage shops for tourists. The massage on offer at these places can be very enjoyable and I use them myself. I'm just saying that they aren't really authentic Thai massage shops.

If you want to experience a genuine Thai massage shop you could make a visit to somewhere like Somboon Wate Charatagarn. It is located in the heart of the fresh market area and I guess the nearest hotel would be the Hatyai Holiday Hotel. It is also close to the Pakistani Mosque and Toranin dental clinic.

The shop might be a little tricky to find. However, the small Soi it is located in has a branch of Siam Commercial Bank on the corner. This should make it easier to find. Just look out for the purple signage of Siam Commercial Bank.

Thai massage (2 hours): Bt300
Foot massage (1 hour): Bt200

The shop opens at 9am. Their business card says it closes at 9pm but the staff told me 6pm.

This place actually refers to itself as a clinic with doctors specialising in Thai massage. If your body has a problem there is a better chance of getting it treated at somewhere like this, rather than the places with the pretty girls.

Customer Comments:

  • This place has at least 20 ladies in the shop itself and for my first visit, I was given a lady from Issan who not only did a very good 2 hours oil massage but also used the tiger balm lotion on my elbow which had a nagging pain. The massage was excellent, there was a request fom me not to switch on the television and for oil massage, you get a private room on the 2nd or 3rd floor with the matress on the floor. The prostate massage request from either party is between you and the lady and it was well done.

There are many ladies with fair skin here but if you are familiar with a good one, stick with her although I am sure this place get my vote as it is centrally located to Lee Gardens Plaza although I did not inquire about whether room service in my hotel room can be arranged. The manager is polite and I am sure just like most massage shops with the prostate massage offered by your lady, it is better not to mention it to him or her.The rate for a prostate is 300 baht and one of the ladies that I can vouch for is number 11. Recommended. (January 2013)

  • I visited S.S. Ancient Massage parlour before my bus trip back to KL last Saturday on 22/12/2012 and opted for the 2 hours oil massage. The lady is from Kalasin and used the tiger balm ointment apart from the normal oil lotion, did a good job and spent the full 2 hours addressing the aches in my body. The room was basic and clean and for a location in Central Hat Yai, it is nearby and if you are given the right masseur then you will get your money worth. I am sure that the extras like the prostate is on offer but to be negiotated with your masseur but strictly nothing more than that. Hot Chinese tea was also given after the massage and for this I rate the overall standard as 8/10. Recommended. (December 2012)

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: This massage shop is definitely a level up in quality compared to most of the massage shops in Hat Yai. It is located right next door to the Red Planet.

It is independently run, and not owned by the hotel. The massage shop just rents premises from the hotel. Thai Odyssey massage has a large presence in Malaysia, with 39 branches, and this one in Hat Yai is the first in Thailand. The massage staff are Thai.

The prices are higher than other Hat Yai massage shops, but this reflects the quality. It would be fairer to compare this shop with the spas in Hat Yai, rather than the regular massage shops.

Foot massage (60 minutes): Bt500
Traditional Thai Massage (60 minutes): Bt400
Traditional Thai Massage (120 minutes): Bt600
Thai Aromatherapy (60 minutes): Bt700
Thai Aromatherapy (120 minutes): Bt980
Thai Herbal Therapy (120 minutes): Bt980

Prices exclude VAT at 7%, so expect your bill to be a little higher than these prices. It's also good to leave a small tip because the girls do their best to please most of the time and don't receive much of a salary.

Remember that cheap doesn't always equate to good value. I've been for plenty of cheap massages where the girl was more interested in watching TV and sending messages on her phone, rather than giving me a massage. Paying Bt200 for that 'service' is a waste of money, whereas paying Bt600 for a really excellent massage is good value.

If you plan to visit regularly, Thai Odyssey offers packages and these work out cheaper because they throw in an extra free session.

Foot Massage (60 minutes) 10 + 1 Package: Bt5,000
Traditional Thai Massage (60 minutes) 6 + 1 Package: Bt2,400
Traditional Thai Massage (120 minutes) 6 + 1 Package: Bt3,600
Thai Aromatherapy (60 minutes) 6 + 1 Package: Bt4,200
Thai Aromatherapy (120 minutes) 6 + 1 Package: Bt5,880
Thai Herbal Therapy (120 minutes) 6 + 1 Package: Bt5,880

Special promotions are also offered during certain periods, for example, from 1st September to 31st December 2014 the price of a foot massage was Bt380 instead of Bt500, and two hours of Thai massage was Bt480 instead of the usual Bt600.

The business hours are from 11am until 11pm.

Customer Comments:

  • Absolutely superb! I've been going for massages in Hat Yai since 2002 and I've had a LOT more bad experiences than good ones. A lot of the rooms at cheap massage shops are shabby and many of the girls have seriously bad attitudes, performing a perfunctory kneading action with one hand while using their other hand to send SMS messages or play with the TV remote control. Thai Odyssey couldn't be any more different to the cheap shops. The difference is night and day, chalk and cheese.

The rooms are clean, comfortable and an oasis of peace - there are no TVs in the rooms, thankfully. The massage staff really know what they are doing - unlike many of the cheap massage shops in Hat Yai - and my massage was performed exquisitely. The girl's touch was firm, but gentle and she performed the massage perfectly with slow, deliberate movements.

The whole experience, from the initial greeting when I entered the shop to being given a receipt when I left, was highly professional and I was also fortunate enough to visit during a time when the shop was offering a special promotional rate.

I thoroughly recommend this massage shop and would go as far to say that you would be crazy to go anywhere else, even if you can save a couple of hundred Baht.

I have found that trying to save money on massages is a very false economy. What is the point of paying Bt200 for a bad experience (there were even occasions when I found myself getting really angry with girls who had bad attitudes) when you can spend a little more and have a truly wonderful experience? (October 2014)

Tong Num Ancient Massage

Tong Num Ancient Massage, Hat Yai - Click for larger image

Longitude: E 100° 28' 15.0" (E 100° 28.250')

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: Some Hat Yai massage shops are quite plush, whereas other feel a bit seedy. This one falls into the latter category. It is the in-house massage shop for the Tong Nam Hotel.

It is located right in the heart of the central tourist district but the street outside is quite dirty. The Tong Nam isn't the most salubrious hotel you will find in town, although the rooms are quite clean. It's a traditional Chinese-Thai hotel, the kind of which were everywhere in Thailand 30 years ago before mass tourism arrived in the country.

The entrance is a small doorway in the street and to reach the shop you must climb a set of stairs. The doorway is next to the branch of 7-Eleven in the Suntisook market area.

This place is very willing to send the girls out to hotels. Other places aren't. On my wedding day between the morning ceremony and the evening reception I asked the hotel to send us two massage girls (one for me and one for the wife). This is where they came from and it was a disaster.

Two foul-mouthed, toothless old hags arrived and while they were pounding us to death, the one operating on my new bride talked incessantly and constantly referred to me as farang.

A massage session takes about 1hr 45mins.

Thai massage: Bt250
Oil massage: Bt600

Customer Comments:

  • Had just under 2 hours before my bus trip back to KL on Saturday 27th October so I decided to check out how seedy or dirty this place was and it was correct... most of the massage ladies were napping on the cushion or in one of the massage rooms. The price for a 2 hours Oil Massage is now at 600 baht and I opted for a lady from Essan who was mostly quiet throughout the session but did mentioned about a hand job at the end of the 1st hour. When I asked on the price, she quoted 500 bahts to which I laughed and requested for a prostate massage which she then ridiculed me by saying that I have a wind problem.. a very rude comment from her and also because I told her that in Hat Yai, one need not pay more than 300 baht for a proper prostate massage. I was then given the head and shoulder massage so all-in-all, I paid 600 baht but the actual massage took just 1 hour and 30 minutes.. a sneaky way of fooling customers. I personally will not recommend this place ever again with the lousy staff, foul-mouthed massage ladies and a cheat. Please go somewhere else like Tunee2, New Season Massage or Sakura Massage where at least the captain is responsible and you get your 2 hours worth. (October 2012)

Comments: Tonphai means bamboo tree in English and the inside of the shop is completely covered in bamboo wood. It's actually quite relaxing.

The shop is located next door to the second branch of Bangkok Massage, which is next to the Kosit Hotel.

This shop is very happy to send masseuse to your hotel room. The service is free and many other massage shops don't offer this service.

I liked the fact that when I went for a massage there were masseuse in the shop. One of my gripes about Hat Yai massage shops is that many have no masseuse on-site. There is just a woman running the shop and when customers arrive she will get on her mobile phone to summon masseuses. This means that you have to wait 10 or 15 minutes before they arrive.

Google Maps: Street Map or Satellite View

Comments: I think the shop's own transliteration is Tum Rub Thai, but I would transliterate something like Dtum Rup Tai. Whatever. It's a good place for a tummy rub.

This is another place where I used to go quite frequently. The rooms are very comfortable, both upstairs and downstairs. The rooms upstairs are Japanese style.

The girls can only massage at the shop. They can't do outcalls and they can't even go to rooms in the hotel where the massage shop is located.

Thai massage: Bt300
Foot massage: Bt500
Oil massage: Bt700

Customer Comments:

  • I used to visit this place for Thai Massage and sometimes request for a Thai/Oil combo. These days, the standard has dropped and if you do come here, please request firmly for the more experienced lady as not every one can perform the Oil massage well. The price for a 2 hours Thai massage is cheap yet do tip the lady after the session. I can only recommend no 5 at hat yai central as she is jovial and does the prostate but the whitish nurse attire do puts me off. (August 2011)

Comments: This massage shop is located opposite the New Season Square hotel and it's a really good place. I walk a lot in Hat Yai and I have had hundreds of foot massages in the town. Some have been a lot better than others. This is one of the best.

Many shops mess you around. They have no masseuses available, but they tell you to take your shoes off and they wash your feet while they try to locate a masseuse. They simply want to keep you in the shop and stop you going elsewhere. It's difficult going somewhere else if you have no shoes. A lot of shops have done this to me and the masseuse who eventually turns up is hideous. Nowadays, if there is no masseuse available immediately I walk out and go to another shop. Some girls have a really bad attitude and look surly all the time.

I had none of these problems at Wonderful. The girls working there are a nice bunch with no hang ups or bad attitudes. The massage chairs are very comfortable and prices very reasonable (the same prices as other massage shops in Hat Yai because there is so much competition).

After a foot massage you normally get a short shoulder massage, but at Wonderful I had the best shoulder and back massage I have ever had. It was excellent.

If you just want a foot massage, as opposed to a body massage, I recommend this place highly.

Customer Comments:

  • I just went to Wonderful opposite New Season Square. Had my feet massaged by a mid age lady. Same time did the ear cleaning too.

At first the 'manager' lady started to clean my ear, only using cotton ball/cotton bud for about 5 mins, then there were customers walking in, she stop and welcome those new customers. That took about 10 mins then she sit back down wanted to continue so I ask is she gonna use other tools too other than cotton ball she reply no cannot use those scooping ones and I'm not quite understand what else she mumble hahaha. Then another mid age lady just finish with another customer and she ask her to take over my ears. So this new lady just scratches a bit and continue cleaning with liquid, I can feel the fizzy poprock-candy like thingy in my ears.

Overall, the foot massage was good they press my shoulder as well. But ear cleaning just ok...

200baht for foot & 200baht for ear too. (December 2019)

Comments: This place is located next door to the now defunct Som Spa. It's a typical Hat Yai massage shop and there are dozens of places in town offering exactly the same services for exactly the same prices carried out by the exactly the same type of masseuses.

Thai massage: Bt300 (2 hours)
